What firmware is in the router now? That will determine the upgrade path. -Glenn KD5MFW

Topic : updating/uploading firmware

I am using a WRT54g v2.0

I am trying to update the firmware, however, every time I go to update it, I get a message that says"the uploaded file is not recognized."  This happens with ANY firmware .bin file, including MESH 0.4.2.

I am familiar with the tftp method using the Linksys tftp.exe and from the Windows command line and am unable to get either to work.

As I watch the pings as the router boots, it never goes to a TTL=128, which usually means the router is listening briefly for a file, as soon as the router is powered on, after a couple seconds, it goes straight to responding to pings with TTL=64.

A hard reset does nothing, it doesn't even respond to a hard reset.  I have done a 30/30/30 reset to no avail, the router keeps booting like normal, and I can access the MESH 0.4.1 GUI.

How can I get it to take another firmware, be it Linksys, DDWRT or the latest MESH??

Topic : portable video nodes

Hi there guys just a quick post to say hi and to say how impressed I've been with HSMM-MESH so far.

I currently have 3 test mesh nodes running on the latest firmware.   The nodes are all linksys wrt54g units but diff model (one a gs one a g and one a gl).    I did try the DD-WRT olsr firmware but didn't manage get it running properly.  I'm not a networking expert but I'm learning :)

I'm interested in getting a mesh system up and running that could be deployed in an emergency situation to carry high quality video feeds from static and mobile units.

has anyone looked at wep etc encryption?   can I add an openwrt pacakage?

New write up about mounting the node itself in a Rootenna. See User Documentation or just click HERE It's a 5mb file so let it load.

Topic : Portable VOIP server

I am looking at different ideas for a portable 12v VOIP server. I have looked at a computer running on 12v to WRT54 and several other ways. I would like to have this system have the capability to be setup in the field and to run on battery power and maybe a small generator. If anyone has any ideas or is currently working on something, I am looking for ideas.

Topic : Fill the gap

Hi Fred, As for the Googlemap, "I" manually enter Lat/Lon into a flat file, and then add those links to another file to draw the lines (red=planned, blue=connected). If you would like to have yours added, email me (jim@k5ktf.com) with your lat/lon, node names, and any links or planned links. The source of the map has brought discussion regarding security, which I completely understand. But I also think, if people could see there are links close to them, then they may be more inclined to 'jump on the train'..... So its a 50/50 thing, and why I made it so one has to register and login to see it, to help quell any nervousness about having their locations on the map. Thanks for coming aboard and 73! Jim K5KTF

Fred, Thanks for your support. I had thought of contacting you about our project but decided to wait until we had more links, but then there must be early adopters to get a basic network in place to attract more users. Plenty will ride the train, once "the tracks have been laid." 73's -Glenn KD5MFW

Topic : Fill the gap

I plan on installing a new node halfway between the KD5FMW node and Cedar Park regional medical center. I am on a hill so hopefully it will allow these nodes to mesh. I will be installing the node using 7.2 dBi Omni antennas at about 20'-25'. I will post again when I get my nodes in the mail, and get them online.

How does the Googlemapped link on the left know where the nodes are?

Thanks, Fred N5JXO

Do you know if this matters with the type of voip you use... like if its Residential Voip or business?

If you're not using a version 0.4.1, you should be!!! If it helps, I connect with EchoLink repeaters from my laptop over my mesh with the 0.4.x versions, no problemo. -Rusty-

Keeping these to see if there is interest in the future.  I found some panel antennas.

Thanks for the update!! I have one of each listed above, and I would be willing to test out the firmware, when you have it ready... I'm hoping to lunch the hsmm firmware on all 3 units, linking BERkeley's ARC with one remote station and another qth with Comcast the annotations will serve as the router/gateway there. I'm so stoke to move my WiFi communications out of the 2.4ghz commercial band!! Wile supporting a local and soon to grow local mesh net....

Topic : Request that HSMM-Mesh firmware be created for Ubiquiti Products

We would like to have HSMM-MESH(tm) firmware running on more hardware platforms. We are working on it but have no published delivery date. Porting the software is much more effort than just recompiling the code. It is a very, very, very large amount of tedious work. If it was easy, we would have done it already. The advantages of having the firmware on additional hardware platforms is obvious. Several of us have Bullet hardware and will let folks know when we have the firmware running on the hardware. It will be announced on the web page. Again, no delivery date has been set. -Glenn KD5MFW

I would like to request that HSMM-Mesh firmware be compiled for Ubiquiti NanoStationLOCOM2, NanoStationM2, and the Bullet2HP. This unit is more than capable of operating within the Ham radio band @ 2.3ghzand, it's perfectible suited for Our efforts to create and expand the HSMM-Mesh Network in Berkeley CA and the Greater SF Bay Area.

Firmware would be greatly appreciated   Surprised

Yes! You knew it was coming. This hasn't been the only announcement!
OK, so the others didn't have an agenda but it's that time again!

Tuesday July 19th!
7pm at 299 Connor Rd, Lucas, TX
Follow the driveway to the back gate and to the pool house.
We don't mind early arrivals especially if they're from Ft Worth. :-)

Map: http://tinyurl.com/3pw5fvq

Talk-in will be on the Plano repeater, 147.180+ PL107.2 (which is announced).

Tomorrow's lineup looks like this:

 • NAT -- How to punch wide holes in the firewall manually!
 • Demo the Mesh Tunnelling that's being worked on in Austin.
 • To Meet or Not To Meet -- That's the question.     Is twice a month too much fun?
 • Ready for the Plano Balloon Fest?
 • Where To Now? Yes, more mesh stuff but what about other digi modes?
 • Wanna build a TNC-X?

So we've kinda gotta full card for tomorrow.
Come and join us at the pool house!

Topic : olsr software

OLSR is not required for your computers connected to mesh nodes. The HSMM-MESH(tm) firmware changes the way the WRT54G works. It no longer acts as an Access Point. Plug in a cable to your computer and plug it into one of the LAN ports and let the mesh do its thing. You can hang a regular Access Point off of one of the mesh node LAN ports and use standard Wi-Fi to talk to that link as a wireless gateway into the mesh, if you link. Try a cable first from your computer to the a mesh node LAN port and let the mesh node assign your computer an IP address. Again, the mesh node does not use AP protocol (infrastructure mode). I use www.titanwireless.com and www.fab-corp.com for most of my parts. Titan is in Round Rock where I live so it is handy. Pick antennas that will work well for where you place the mesh nodes. Remember, Line Of Sight is important for links of much distance. -Glenn KD5MFW

Is OLSR Software required on each of the computers connected to the MESH in order for them to see the routes?  If so does anyone know of a software that will run on OSX?  I have checked out the olsr.org website but the pre-compiled binary is missing (link 404/not found).

I have two WRT54G's with the hsmm firmware installed, both see each other fine. My next step is to setup a mini web server on one end with my macbook on the other and see if I can load it up.  I will of course setup the correct port forwarding.

Does anyone have tips on were to get a good antenna for these? I have been looking online and found a few and I'm just wondering if there is a 'more trusted' source that is a hsmm go-to.

Thanks,

-Chris
