I am very new at this, however I always enjoy your posts...they are very informative and I really appreciate that.  Keep up the great work, and keep it as simple as possible.  As soon as I figure out how to put my picture on here I will...I have tried more than 10 times and it is very frustrating.

My GPS tells me the coordinates of each of my two antenna locations but since they will be too far apart to see each other visually, I won't know which direction to aim them. I need to know which bearing to take from one to the other.

I found a free app for my Ipod Touch that takes the coordinates of each antenna and reports the direction in which to aim each of them.

I realize this is a gentlemans agreement, and I am guessing most states default to the 1991 ARRL bandplan

Have you looked into the surface-mount OpenTracker from [url=https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=64]ArgentData[/url]. It is designed to be installed inside the WRT54G on the unpopulated TTL serial port. It would then give you either a fully featured APRS digi (or client) or you can use it as a KISS TNC. You would still need the VHF radio to mate with it. As a KISS TNC, it can be "kiss-attach'ed" to the network inside the router, and then you can treat it like any other network device and route traffic. Or use the mesh network as the backhaul for an APRS-Igate. Argent also sells a small 300mw data radio. I don't know if you can get the whole thing inside the case..

The active firmware developers are few in number and they have requests that would easily take decades to complete.  So we have to focus on what we feel will be of the most help to the most users of the firmware developed.

There are very few routers from any vendor that have not been considered for firmware support. We started out with Open-Wrt firmware as our base.  Much of what we do is guided by what Open-Wrt supports.  The Open-WRT tools is where the list of generated firmware we post comes from.  This was an Open-WRT decision to group routers based on similar chip sets.

To use some of the compiled firmware posted, you may have to take additionl steps to get the firmware to load in other than the supported routers.  We simply do not have the resources to port the fw to all the routers that people might find at  yard sale or in the trash.

We would welcome more firmware developers that would work with us to support more routers.  Anyone that takes on that task must realze that they will get a lot of "quick questions" that are not quick to answer.

So yes, we have thought about porting HSMM-MESH(tm) fw to just about any wireless router made.  There are millions of usable Linksys WRT54G routers in the world.  They are not hard to find.  So we focused on this popular, easy to find, super versitile hardware platform.

When we get the fw ported to a new hw platform and stable.  We will post the news on the home page of this web site.

Just wondering if anyone has thought about using the non-version type Linksys routers for repeaters. I see a lot of people are making the Linksys G, GS and GL models into repeaters only for WiFi. Just wondering if this could be done with for what we are doing? I know that the newer one's don't have enough flash memory to work, but maybe a stripped down version of the HSMM-Mesh software that would only repeat the version of HSMM-Mesh that we're using. If this could be done then that would open the door to be able to use the later versions that are out there.

Just a thought..

Aside from OPENWRT for the WRT54G and including OLSRD, what makes the packaged versions available here "special"?

Are there particular changes to the olsrd that are not in the main branch that are needed?  Do they make the olsrd included incompatible with other implementations?

Or is it just that you've made my life easier by pre-configuring everything and making it a snap?

I have several AR670W "N" devices that use the ramips architecture.  They have sufficient RAM and flash, and they're available for $25 new.

(I also have a few AR430W which are not as easy to find now, but are decently equipped with R-SMA external antennas, convenient to attach to an external gain antenna)

I have downloaded the OPENWRT source and compiled the firmware, but without olsrd.

(I did grab the release AFTER Kamikaze, and maybe I should try the Kamikaze build)

I have downloaded the HSMM from SVN, which has olsrd, but haven't sorted out how to bring over the olsrd from HSMM into the mainline SVN dump from OPENWRT.

I have other devices capable of running olsrd, but only if it would be compatible with the olsrd included in the HSMM builds.

I've been contemplating a mesh for town since I first heard about OLSRD a few years ago, but now another ham has caught the bug and maybe it'll gain some traction.

Hi, inuyasha Yes, I understand that POE is described in 802.3af and from what I've read there are two modes, A and B. Mode A delivers power on the data pairs (Phantom power) and mode B delivers on the 2 unused pairs. I was wondering if there was an HSMM-MESH standard specifying either A or B. Thanks, Mark KV4I

Hi Glenn, What I did was look on front page and , yes I see the hardware to use. What I did see though, was on the software files section a listing for the WRT150N model. That's why I tried to use it, figuring since it was given to me I could afford to play with it and if it bricked it was ok.

Now, as inuyasha.rules has stated, I did do some searching on this unit. It does appear to have enough flash memory in it. I did find on the dd-wrt web site that on some of the WRT150N units you have to do a simple software flash before it will accept a third party software upgrade. So with that in mind, I'll be trying that later to day after work.

I will keep all posted if I get it to flash and work.
