Topic : Need rural net access for video surveillance

Good evening All,

So I'm brand new to MESH, long time interest but finally getting around to ordering hardware (just ordered 2 WRT54GS routers, yes versions are within 1-3)....

Here's what I'm needing...

I have two river properties directly across the river from each other.  The western property (8 acres) has the house and satellite internet access (which sucks since it is so slow, but it's the only thing available).  The eastern property (7 acres) is a nice pasture.  I'm needing internet access at the eastern property but the distance is about 1750' from the house internet wireless router.

So, would it be best to install a MESH system at the eastern property OR would something else be better?

I'm needing to install a medium quality 4k surveillance system on the eastern property in order to monitor the eastern property for trespassing (Im tired of people coming onto my property and tearing the place up, littering, partying, etc).  I'm looking for a 4k video surveillance system that's capable to "pushing" activity notifications to my cellphone so that anytime I get a notification I can either investigate the possible trespass situation or I can call someone to look into it if I'm not in town.

If I get suggestions of installing something other than the MESH does anyone know of a 4k surveillance system that has some sort of integrated internet access that I can install with the surveillance system?

I plan to run power at the eastern property using a small LiFePo4 battery (automotive size) charged with a single solar panel.

Really hoping that someone can help me with this.  I need this system to be installed by April 2020.

Jeff

Hello All,

New to HSMM-Mesh and looking to buy some equipment.  Just purchased 2 Linksys WRT54GS v 1-3s and hope to have them in hand later this week.

Looking for a gently used  TP-Link 24dBi parabolic dish antenna for my system so if anyone have one for sale or an extra one they dont need plz let me know.  You can reach me at my call-sign at gmail.com.

Also looking for a Mesh elmer.  Since I'm so rural it would probably be best for me to learn via email although I'm not opposed to meeting in person if the distance is right.

Hope to hear from someone soon.  Thanks

Jeff

Topic : HSMM-PI on Raspberry Pi3

I've installed the urlgrey/hsmm-pi repository from GitHub on two PI zero W's that I have and have been using my little network for a year or so.

My PI's are running Raspbian stretch lite, but I suspect that buster would work fine, too.

I've installed the PI's as headless and ssh in through the USB interface from my home network computers (all Linux or BSD).

Try reflashing with .trx file NOT the .bin file

One year later, and the SVN links don't work for me either. Randel

Has anyone been successful in uploading BBHN firmware

to this version? Any suggestions? I don't want to brick it!

Hello,

I just tried doing this with Winlink and was unable to get it to work.  Every time I tried it it said it failed because "the target machine actively refused it.". I tried disabling the firewalls on both laptops and even enabling ports, but to no avail.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I can provide a tunnel for you to get started, if you don't have one already. Orv W6BI orv.beach@gmail.com

Hello :It has been along time. Now I am able to setup a HSMM-MESH. I have a WRT54GL, which I would like to put on the Node. What kind of .bin program do you use to upload the new program to the Router? I have printed out the instructions, but rand into the problem on downloading an install the program. Please advise. My email is: wd4plb1@gmail.com. Thank you. Walter

Bob I've been experimenting with my Pi3 b+ for the past three days. I can not seem to launch the program, either locally or from another PC in the network. No problem setting up through SSH. Not sure at this point that the Pi is compatible with the hsmm-pi software. Gus KC4JVE. S Florida.

I also need my nodes removed from the map. The map will not load for me so that I can verify my nodes are still on it but if they are please take them off. They were located in Laurel, Maryland. I have relocated to another state and not reactivated the nodes. Thanks, Gary KC8UD

Topic : One-Way traffic?

I have just setup 2 wrt54gl v1.1 routers using 3.1.0 and am having issues getting node 2 to exchange data with node 1. Using localnode:8080 on node 1, I can "see" node 2 and can use the link to access node 2.  I can also ping the wireless address without problem.  However, when I attempt to use localnode:8080 on node 2 to access node 1, I just get a webpage could not be reached timeout error.  Pinging the addresses from node 2 -> node one doesn't work either.  I have tried multiple computers (win and mac) on each node and the results are the same, so the problem does not seem to be computer related

The localnode:8080 works on both routers for status, login and configuration purposes (with any computer that I try), but traffic is only flowing from node 1 to node 2, and not from node 2 to node 1 (other than what I have describe above).

Both installs are 3.1.0 and were done this weekend with no configuration changes other than the setup for node names.

Any help would be appreciated.  (PS i live in Wyoming, so there is no local ham that even has a clue about mesh networking.)

This link might be of interest to configure the ESP8266 for mesh networks:
