I have 2 WRT54GL routers successfully set up with v 1.0.0.  I connected one node to my ATT Uverse gateway and configured it with the “Mesh Gateway” checked and set up services to make the internet available using Port 80.  I plugged my other node to a laptop and was able to access the internet once I click on the Internet service.  Is it possible to connect a node to a laptop that has Internet connectivity via WiFi and make the Internet available to other Mesh Nodes?  If so, how would one configure the Mesh Node that is connected to the laptop?  My apologies if this has already been answered; I look through the forums and did not see this.

Off the top of my head internet connection sharing might work, setting up a bridge between the wifi connection and meshnet one. I'll search around and see if I can find some more information but that should point you in the right direction.

You'd need a laptop with a wired ethernet connection and wifi.

Set the laptop up to pick up internet via its wifi card and feed it out the wired ethernet connection.  I think that's what "Internet Connection Sharing" on Windows does, but I've never used it. There are probably other ways to do the same function, but the only "magic" is getting the laptop to feed "internet" out the ethernet port.

Use an ethernet cable from the laptop to the WAN port on the WRT-54G.  I think the WAN port is auto MDI-X, so you won't need a crossover cable.   Enable "mesh gateway" and you're done.

Your laptop will see the mesh node configuration web pages on http://x.x.x.x: 8080, but the laptop won't have access to anything else on the mesh.  x.x.x.x is the IP address your laptop gives the mesh node.

Thank you for your response! I will try your suggestion and see if it works. I want to set up a demo at our club meeting. I can get internet via WiFi but not a wired connection. I want to show how an internet connection can be shared with other nodes. -73 de KI6GRO

If the wifi connection is not encrypted, you could use another WRT-54G with BBHN and put it into the "wireless client" mode.  It will then take a wifi signal and then put out a wired ethernet connection.  Plug the mesh node into the wireless client router.

I'm not sure whether a BBHN router will connect to an encrypted wifi network if it's running in wireless client mode.  Does anyone know?

If a BBHN router won't hook to an encrypted wifi, you could put DD-WRT on the second WRT-54G, and I'm pretty sure DD-WRT will do wireless client function on an encrypted wifi network.

Thank you so much! I tried your first suggestion and it worked! My laptop is connected to the internet via WiFi and the node is configured for internet "services". I shared the WiFi connection with the local connection (Ethernet) in the network settings. I connected the node to the laptop via the WAN port and connected my desktop with my other node. The only changes made to the internet node was to check the mesh gateway box and reboot it. For my club demo I plan to use a Verizon hotspot to establish a WiFi internet connection and share that connection with other nodes. We plan to have other nodes up with a camera and at least 1 chat server and more. Thanks again! -73 de KI6GRO
