Good morning,

I ran across the HSMM artices and it got my attention. Now, a few trift stores later I have my WRT56G's and am trying to upgrade the firmware via this site. I have a WRT56G V1.00.9. It should upgrade easily, but it is not. It fails every time. I double check the right software (hsmm-mesh-0.4.0-wrt54g.bin)

If you have tips or know what I am doing wrong, please speak up.

Thanks in advance

Josh

Hi Josh, what errors does it give? And at what point? Jim K5KTF

Well, I have tried so many frimware options that I made myself a little confused.

If you have the time I will write what I have and maybe you can help point me in the right direction.

Two Linksys:

WRT54G v.1.00.9

WRT54GS v.7.2.06

I have tried OpenWRT and DD-WRT. Both did not work. It is must likely my fault, I do not have any IT background. If it was a T/R or radar I would be all over it. (Coast Guard ET1)

Which should I try again and any pointers?

Correction, I did not try OpenWRT. Mine are not supported via it.

OK, on the WRT54G v.1xx, what state is it in now? If it is still in the standard Linksys state, I would try and re-download the firmware file for your specific one again, just in case something on the download got weird. I have seen this kind of thing happen. Once you have got it again, then log into the router, go to the firmware update page, select the file from your drive where you saved it, and click update/upload. From there, what happens? Walk me through what you see, and maybe we can figure it out. thx & 73 KTF

Small note -- those version numbers that Josh mentions are LinkSys FIRMWARE version numbers and not the HARDWARE version numbers that we generally go by. The 54G's that Josh obtained may not have sufficient FLASH & RAM to load the regular OpenWRT let alone the HSMM-MESH configuration.

The hardware version for a particular 54G is located on a sticker on the bottom of the unit in the little box that says WRT54G Version.... Only Version 1.0 did NOT have a version listed.

Again, if the hardware version for a 54G or 54GS is 5 or greater then the HSMM-MESH firmware can not be loaded.

Sorry for the delay. I was TDY to Portsmouth, Va. (Coast Guard stuff) I just got back and read ae5ae's post. He is soooo correct! I was reading the version number from the 192.168.1.1 page. Not the sicker in the bottom of the router. I must have missed that part somewhere but it makes me fell better. I was going crazy with the project.

The Goodwill down the street has about 10 of them sitting on the shelve for 8.00 each, so I will pick up two new ones in the morning.

Thanks again,

Thanks you for all of your help. I am stumbling through this. I purchased two WRT54G (Version 1.1) and upload the software. It worked.

Now, what do I do with them???

Back to the manuals….

Feel free to help with whatever is next.

Josh

Hi Josh, You can do whatever you do on a standard TCP/IP network. Transfer files between PC's, hook up IP telephones, IP cameras, etc etc etc. But please do NOT use it for 'regular' internet access. That should be done outside of ham radio usage with normal routers, etc. Using the internet to update the firmware, maybe other ham-related activities, OK. But to just surf willy nilly, thats starting to cross the threshold of Part97. The real thing we need to happen is to get many more people to get working nodes, so we can all connect to each other and to the hospitals/EOC's/etc so we can have an emergency network up and going. As far as that goes, we are still in infancy. Now that the firmware works really well and fairly automagically, I hope more and more will come online. My neighbor and I transfer files, I log in to his nodes when he runs into an issue and help configure, test range, etc. I have ports open that he could send email or RMS Winlink email through, he can hit the web server, view my camera, etc. Just stuff to practice while we wait for others to get nodes up and going, so we can all get connected. If you have/find an application to use over the mesh, please post it to the forums (specific area for them) for all to see and get ideas. 73 Jim K5KTF

K5KTF, I am new to the networking side of the world but great with the RF world. I really just want a small setup but everything I read engulfs me. To me, all lot of the documentation is for larger networks. Would you (or anyone) walk me though the setup for a really side mesh?

Here what I have:

two (2) WRT54G w/ HSMM-Mesh firmware

two (2) WRT54G w/ Linksys

old laptop w/o wireless

HP Mini wireless

What would be a starter project to begin? My man cave is on the 3rd floor with the old laptop and mini is on 1st. Just want to know the setting and a piece of software to run. I what to see it work, then build off of it.

Meanwhile, I have asked my ITC so many questions at work he is bring in his old book from school to shut me up.

Thanks

Josh

Starter projects could be as simple as having a IP cam on one node, and viewing it across the mesh to a PC on another node. Then if you had 2 PC's, setup file sharing and transfer files back and forth. My neighbor "likes to practice with file transfers from my 500GB 'music' share to his PC" ;-) ;-) If your IT guy brings in the book, READ IT. It may sometime seem a bit long in the tooth, but whatever you can gleam from it would be well worth it IMHO. (but then, Im a PC/network geek by trade anyways :-) ) The point here is, ANYTHING that can be done over a "regular" network can be done over Mesh. 73 KTF
