Hi Kevin :) We are pretty much in the same boat here. Still in the learning / testing phase. I too am hoping to get something going before the holidays. Good luck with your network :) 73 ve1xt

Hi Anthony When I get the antenna up and able to rotate it (By end of November) I will look for your signal from across the lake. We are also looking at installing a node at one of our repeater sites which has a good footprint from here in Fonthill. I will let you know when we are ready to fire things up. Cheers Kevin, va3kgs

Hi Jeff, I have the hardware and I just need to install the firmware to get started. I live in Riveside South (South of the airport on the shore of the Rideau River). What part of town are you in? Daniel VE3DCL

Hi Kevin, You can try pointing to Mississauga. We have a node (VE3MIS) with an omni and an amp running on top of the 20-storey building with the perfect view on the lake. It should be about 60km across the lake to the escarpment. I wonder if you can get a shadow of our signal. The node is still running the old firmware though. Regards, Anthony

Topic : OLSR Switch on Windows works to connect directly to the mesh.

I was able to get an old version of OLSR Switch working with BBHN on my laptop.

This one:

http://www.olsr.org/releases/0.5/olsrd-0.5.6-r3-pre-cac1df64dcd5-setup.exe

Found here:

http://www.olsr.org/?q=download

... is apparently the last binary they posted on olsr.org for windows. They are currently on V0.6.6, and you can go through some back flips to set up a development environment and compile it, but I have not gotten that to work so far. But the last binary does work. Id be very excited to find someone who can compile it - maybe you can post it on  hsmm-mesh.org for general consumption?

I connected to BroadbandHamnet-v1 using my built in wifi, went in and configured a static IP in the 10.x.x.x range (used the LSB triple of the MAC address for x.x.x). Then I fired up OLSR Switch. In the interfaces window, I checked on the 10.x.x.x address of my wifi interfaces and clicked off all the other interfaces. Then I hit Start. In the nodes tab I could immediately see my lone QTH node. I checked to see if I could ping it and that was good. Then I connected to the GUI interface with the web browser. That was good. Its all good! Windows on the mesh!!

I am going use OLSR Switch with a USB WIFI adapter so I can use two wifi interfaces at the same time (one for Part 15 and one for Part 97). Then I am going to write a little batch script to run under Cygwin and nc to put out hamcall beacon packets every 5 minutes to keep it all Part 97.

This is very good! I have been irritated about having to connect to the ethernet to use the node when I am around the house but not in the hamshack.

Now I need to figure out how to get it onto my old obsolete android phone and tablet.... and this looks promising...

https://guardianproject.info/builds/OLSRMeshTether/

I suspect that only the latest olsr versions support IPV6 and that would be highly preferable to making up a 10. IPV4 address and increase the risk of an eventual address collision. But right now I cant get it to compile.

Cheers;

ok here you go this (or something similar) should be in-line between any/all mesh gateways and an ISP (in this case "green interface" facing mesh, "red interface" facing internet) http://www.endian.com/us/community/download/efw/

Just keep in mind that it works with sd-cards <2gb, as over 2gb is SDHC>.

I've written an article on getting SDHC cards working and have compiled driver to get them mounted and writable. Take a look here:
http://hsmm-mesh.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-2-hardware/topic-253-wrt54g-tm-mmhcsdhc-card-support.html

Just keep in mind that BBHN cannot be loaded on anything over v4 routers. As these routers use vxworks. Even if you upgrade the memory, you still have to find a work around for vxworks (which can be painful).

Topic : WRT54G-RG help

Came across a similar problem when I was trying to get a WRT54G-RG going. No problem getting the ddt-wrt firmware installed. Just would not load the bin in the next step. Tried all kinds of things, 30/30/30, just would not take the upload. The SSID would not change so to me that verified the software did not upload. When I manually reset the router, it would not ask me for the newly assigned username/password, it would just log me in directly so something is messed.

Then reading a response in this thread regarding FireFox, so I do remember something similar happening to me in another application so, after a few days with the router off, I opened up Internet Explorer logged in to ddt-wrt using the correct new username/password I assigned, and proceeded to upload the GS version of the bin. Immediately I saw a difference in the response, the 299s timer was counting down and in the background you could see the progress bar actually progressing. This all looked like it suppose to look when updating. Sure enough, leaving the router alone it did reset on it's and monitoring the SSID with a wifi analyser, "MeshNode" appeared instead of" ddt-wrt" and this of course it was it should be.

So as much as we like FireFox, IE still has it's place. That's all the problem was.

I was wondering if anyone has attempted to use either of these types of device?

maybe a better way to go http://www.yourwarrantyisvoid.com/2009/09/09/add-an-sd-card-slot-to-a-wrt54g-v2/

Just keep in mind that it works with sd-cards <2gb, as over 2gb is SDHC.

If you have a fixed node. I'd recommend getting it added to the map. http://www.hsmm-mesh.org/googlemapped-mesh-nodes.html

Topic : HSMM-MESH in Utah

Nothing been posted here in over four months so I will add stuff. I have added a half-watt amp to my Hamnet 8 dbi antenna in East Mill Creek and it is still running at the same location. SLCC has added a node on top of their Technology Building. It is my understanding that a node has been placed or will be placed on Ensign Peak shortly. There are a few groups pursuing setting up WiFi in many areas in Salt Lake and and Davis Counties. Some are using the Hamnet software and some are using the Ubiquiti Bullets. I have heard that someone was able to use Hamnet on the Ubiquiti Bullet. I am hoping that this forum doesn't die. We still need it in spite of all the in-person meetings happening across the valley.

I overheard you last night on the .76 machine and you logged off before I could talk to you. I am also in the area, I should have my router tomorrow up and running. I have a rotatable grid dish up at 45' on the tower. I also would like to try it out mobile. I travel around Columbus all day so it could be fun.

I don't have a definate answer for you, but I know in the 8-12%, we couldn't get them to link. Once improved to 35-40%, the link remained quite reliable. You're probably right on in the 20-30% + needed for reliablilty.
