Hi,

I want to flash HSMM firmware V0.4.3 into WRT54G routers  I just picked up for a tunnel linking project.  I read that it's unstable in V1.0.0.

Where can I find the V0.4.3 bin file?  I've only found the trx file to downgrade from the latest version.

Or, do I have to flash V1.0.0. and downgrade? Thanks Ron

If I may ask, where did you read that garbage of it being unstable? The NW-Mesh guys??? lol

1.0.0 is AS stable as 0.4.3 was, plus a few fixes added in.

Whoever is spouting that crap, send over to me and Ill straighten them out :-)

73 and Merry Christmas!

I read it in the VPN forum. If you know of anyone using V1.0.0. and IP tunneling with it, could you direct me to them? I would sure be interested in learning from them as well. However, if someone would want to flash with the V0.4.3, like me, where would I find it. Is there a BBHN/HSMM firmware archive directory. I was a good boy so Sanata should be nice to me. Happy Holidays to everyone de ron

I personally have rebuilt our old developer tunnel host here at my QTH, and it is WAY more stable than what it was on 0.4.3.

The problem with 0.4.3 and tunneling was that the older OLSR did NOT like talking to multiple interfaces, and would crash every so often, requiring the watchdog to restart it.

That was fixed in the OLSR included in 1.0.0.

I have had our tunnel back up for about a month now, and it has yet to crash.

We are using a different tunnel mechanism that what Johan is supplying info for. The GRE protocol is a bear to get to pass home routers, which most of us use here in the US, so we went back to our old scheme, which requires more flash and ram due to its bigger payload than SM7I's. I Myself and 2 others tried connecting using his info with little success, unless we out the nodes right out on the open internet (brrrr, gives me chills just thinking about it :-)  )

We have a guy in the dev group that is sure he can recompile the original down to get rid of unneeded dependencies to let it fit onto regular WRT's, and I hope by the end of the year Ill have time to write up on its install.

I have every version going back to 0.4.0 in my vault (I host the web site and do weekly backups :-)  ). But I strongly suggest staying with 1.0.0.

Have a look at this thread by Johan/SM7I.

http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-29-swedenfinland/topic-611-vpn--gre-tunneling.htm

I followed these directions on my BBHN node (V1.0.0) and got a tunnel up with a nearby ham on the other side of a local mountain no problem. The tunnel has actually been more stable than the radio on the same node.

In my own case, I ignored the Dynamic DNS instructions because my ISP has stable DHCP leases. I used numerical addressing. And picked 172.30.1.x/4 addressing instead of what was described in:

Thanks Gentlemen for your input. Before I proceed further, I just wanted to clarify what I meant to say was that I was told the tunnel is unstable on V1.0.0 and not that V1.0.0 is unstable. Sorry, for that. I've been using Johan's instructions on our downgraded V0.4.3. and finally got it working. I didn't 100% the first time around when I used V1.0.0, However, now that I have the tunnel running, I will upgrade back to V1.0.0. and see how that works out. I really don't want to use the older version so I'm glad to hear that it's been working fine on the latest. 73 de ron

Hi Jim, You had mentioned an alternative to GRE tunneling that works well on v1.0.0 firmware. Is information available on how to implement this? I have a couple of WRT54G-RG routers with extra memory that I can use. Currently a few of us are using v0.4.3 with Johan SM7I's GRE tunneling which has been working well, but I would like to be able to take advantage of the improvements in the v1.0.0 firmware. 73 AL
