Well I have 2 routers I managed to crash and I cant get back in to reload them! Any ideas on how to reload the firmware I had them working at one point then I hit the firmware upgrade button in the administration area and that was that!

They all have good instructions for fixing your problem.

Before you try anything, try the failsafe method first and make sure the boot_wait flag is turned on (http://www.macfreek.nl/memory/OpenWRT_on_WRT54GL#Install_from_LinkSys_to_Kamikaze_with_Linux_2.4_kernel)

You will need to download the stock Linksys firmware before going back to BBHN. I've bricked my routers many times, and sometimes the fastest way for me to recover was by jtag or TFTPing after shorting pins 15 & 16 on my WRT54G v2.

You will want to try TFTPing first (you might have to be very patient and try multiple times).  If you don't have a jtag device, but you do have good eyes and a steady hand, short pins 15 & 16 (WRT54G only, WRT54GL is 16 & 17) and then TFTP the firmware.  Only do the last one after doing a lot of reading so you know what you are doing.

how do you not brick a router Some how mine got Bricked Ie no 8080 or 192.168.1.1 just some kind of loop back ip addresses like 244. or 168. and I ened up frying a 12volt wall wart and fried a chip on my wrt54gl linksys router the only thing that happens now is a blinking power light. May be I should have not changed my SSID on the Router or was it the fact that once I had the firmware installed, I clicked on a dropdown box for it to be a Hsmm-mesh AP?? any Thoughts? I have bought two more Linksys from NewEgg with a no fault warenty

You do not brick a router by not unplugging it during an upgrade or loading custom firmware where you inadvertently change some settings and lock yourself (or anyone else) out.

As for an address, you find the mesh node on http://172.27.0.1:8080 or http://localnode:8080. For Mesh AP's the address is http://172.27.0.2:8080. In order for you to get a DHCP lease though, you need to plug a Mesh AP into a standard mesh node.

What hardware model is it? Include version # please.

I have heard of a couple others that brick on upgrade, and I want to see if its a specific hardware model.

If you have a serial level shifter and can solder, hook up COM1 of the router to a PC and see what the console is doing at power-on.

Jim, I bricked my WRT54G3G-AT during the upgrade from V0.43 to V1.0. The power LED is flashing for ever after a power up. I upgraded 5 WRT54Gs before without problem. All my upgrades were done the same way thru the admin page and an internet connection. 73 Remi W5/F6CNB

Have you tried TFTPing the stock Linksys firmware back to the router, editing the first 4 bytes of the BBHN firmware to match that of Linksys' first 4 bytes of their firmware and uploading it again?

If all fails and you give up, send me an e-mail and I will see about helping you out off-forum.

Yes, I have recovered the wrt54g3g. I tftp the modified 0.43 version (header bytes ) then I upgrade it with a local 1.0 file. It is now working fine as a fifth node on my local mesh in Frelsburg Texas. 73s Remi W5/F6CNB

AF7J, The 169 address you got was an 'autoconfigure' one. That happens because the router does not start serving IP addresses because it is not configured correctly, or is still booting. If you reboot the router, windows loses connection, and restarts the network card. If the router is blinking the power light, it has some smarts still. If you fried one of the chips no guaratees, but you can try the process at:http://blog.irrashai.com/blog/2008/09/how-to-debrick-a-wrt54g-router/ Because of the connection issue, it is important that you put a hub between your router and your machine. If you have a hub, windows will keep the connection open, and you can ping 192.168.1.1 to see if the router is responding. Thanks AD7PE
