I have one wrt54g that I've reporgrammed and an external ~12 db yagi from ebay.

the yagi looks like this one, but with 13 directors.

I, too, have a 12 bdi antenna, but I haven't checked its range from a high vantage point yet. Do you have any field experience with its range at hight, say, from you roof/tower, etc? A few of us are about 3 miles apart. It appears plausible to link with two 12 dbi's, one at each end.

This forum is run by the hsmmmesh.org guys. I just got thdm to create a section for us. =) The icon is a "dancing evil banana", and he cracks me up! I would like to see all of us on the google map so that we can coordinate connectivity tests, and figure out the best way for all of us to interconnect. As this gets more popular in our area we will have an easier time of it, but for now, we'll have to use dedicated, high-gain antennas. I would like to propose we try circularly polarized, high-gain antennas for this. Another member here linked to an excellent construction website for a super cheap and robust antenna tnat looks like it would do the trick. No matter the antenna choice, I would like to propose that we link up on a local repeater one weekend here, and take turns tryong to link up with eachother. We can use the repeater to report link state, etc, and get a lot done in one day, with a number of others all at once. What do you guys think of these suggestions? - Mike

I tried field tests with a unit in the front window of my house, and a mobile 12 dbi directional antenna atop a 12 foot pole. Aiming at the house from down the street, the best distance I could do was 485 feet, with a receive signal level of -92 db. Aiming at another ham's directional antenna (going to confirm gain at his end) I managed to get a -95 db signal at 1,500 feet, when I had direct line of sight. All of the group's testing so far would tend to suggest that we'll need roof-mounted parabolic dishes to span 2 or more miles in these urban settings. Hmmmmmm

I have picked up the raw materials to make two helical antennas. Am planning on making at least one of them this weekend, with testing to follow. I would expect two helicals (at around 12-17 dbi each) would be good for a link of a couple of miles. This, especially, as the antennas would tend to reject both horizontalyl and vertically polorized signals along the way. I am following the helical design posted to these forum pages a few weeks ago. I will forward my test results, bill of materials, and finalized dimensions once I've built and fine tuned the antennas. '73 - Mike DM14 Victorville

Good evening,

 

My name is Paul, K6GPZ, and I reside in Temple City. I know...not exactly the "High Desert", but this is the only group close enough for now.

 

Either way, I have a few routers and switches all uploaded with the MESH firmware. I've tested the system quite a bit, and was even successful on running two phones (VOIP) via 3CX, using my computer as the PBX server. System works flawlessly!

 

Well, just wanted to say HI!!

Hi, again, Christy! I took up the cause, once again, and now that I have a mast mounted to the chimney on my house I will be able to put a directional WiFi antenna up there above the roof. I will try the 14dbi panel antenna first, and see how far away I can pull signals in reliably. More to follow... - Mike

I now have a Linksys node up an running continuously, and have been playing with HSMM-PI nodes to determine range, etc. The Pi node(s) currently run intermittently, while I look around for potential sites.

I am working on adding services, which will include a GPS-referenced Stratum 0 NTP server in the near future. I am also working on powering a couple of nodes from solar/wind rather than the A/C mains.

Now to drum up some interest among the local Barstow hams and ham club...

Anyone mobile through Barstow on I-15 or US-58 should be able to see my node.

Will the flashed Ubiquity units, 2.4 or 5.8 operate in the Part 97 spectrum, outside the ISM band?

Is the power adjustable on both bands?

What is the maximum power level of both bands configurable via the firmware?

I personally tend to think of 2.4 as an access layer where you feed it to areas you want to cover, and. 5.8 as the backbone connecting access sites (aka a 2.4ghz cluster in one area fed to a 5.8 back haul which feed down to a  subsets of 5.8 sites). This way you keep all the major noise on 2.4 (lots of users comming and going) and design your local area repeaters (like a node the can feed a section of a city ) to uplink on 5.8 and let users access on 2.4.   You also get the advantage that Linksys users can still get in as well. Of course that is just my personal thought on it at the moment, I can't gurantre it's the right way for everywhere and is ultimately something each area will need to decide on and evaluate as more feedback is given about 5ghz.

In regards to the frequency range the units currently only operate on the normal frequencies ranges that the hardware is designed and tested for.

The power is adjustable on all units, the maximum power is determined by what the hardware is rated for and varies based on model and band, you should reffer to the Ubiquti data sheets for more information on the hardware capabilities.

Agreed were deploying 5GHz for our Back Bone I purchased 4 BulletM5-HP and we have a few of the 2.4 GHz Bullets for local use and as extenders to the MESH. My only issue is now why are they set for only the shared part of the spectrum 5745, 5765, 5785, 5805, 5825 and don't include the HAM only areas and can I alter the firmware to include the HAM only sections.
